Developing New Architecture In Cairo
Cairo Expo City
Being designed together with multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold, Cairo Expo City will be located between the city centre and Cairo's airport, the design being particularly appreciated from above. The undulating forms of the Cairo Expo City design were inspired by the natural topography of the Nile valley explained Zaha Hadid:
"As the exhibition spaces require the greatest degree of flexibility, we wanted to ensure that all the public spaces and formal composition of Cairo Expo City relate to the surrounding Egyptian landscape.” said Hadid. “Along the great rivers of the region, most particularly the Nile, there is a powerful dynamic - a constant flow between the water and the land - which extends to incorporate the neighboring buildings and landscapes. For the Cairo Expo City design, we worked to capture that seamlessness and fluidity in an urban architectural context."
Secrets of the Pyramids revealed?
Designs have just been revealed for the Grand Museum of Egypt in Cairo. After the ‘fairytale’ competition win by Dublin based firm Heneghan Peng over 1550 architects from 83 countries, the design team has grown to 120 engineers and architects including 14 consultancy firms from five countries. Roisin Heneghan, “One challenge of the site was to engage with the Great Pyramids without competing visually with them. Yet at the same time the importance of the Museum also demands that it have its own distinctive identity. The design took a two fold approach; by creating a new translucent stone cliff face to the plateau, a strong singular identity for the Museum is created. By creating the space for the Museum within the view axis to the Pyramids, the Museum and the Pyramids combine to create a single space, a new archaeological site.” The museum will cost $550 million and take four years to build.
City Grand Promenade, Giza, Egypt
The City Grand Promenade (an un-built project) is located on the Giza Plateau near the Giza Pyramids Complex, the project size is 189,000 sq m with estimated cost $230 million. The project is one of several large scale commercial projects coming up around Cairo.
These up and coming retail centres are introducing fresh perspectives on commercial experiences. In this light, the City Grand Promenade aimed to present an outstanding entertainment experience & increase the land value by creating a spacious commercial street facing the pyramids.

Ramses Square to be transformed by French-Egyptian Design
Cairo is undergoing a modern 'facelift'. With projects such as the Cairo Expo City, recently awarded to Zaha Hadid, and Sorouh City commuter district currently in design development by Callison, the ancient city is swiftly changing shape, expanding as a centre of business. With the expansion the centre of the city suffers from traffic congestion, population increase and the confusion of uses and functions. Invited by the Cairo Governate, a competition was held via the UIA to develop an 'urban harmony' in Ramses Square in the centre of Cairo which could address these problems.
For generations people have visited the sandy plains of Cairo to marvel at one of the 7 wonders of the world, the truly awe-inspiring Egyptian Pyramids. Generating over 11 million visitors a year, the structures mean big business for the North African country's tourist trade. Egypt is certainly no stranger to statement architecture, so designs released by Zaha Hadid Architects showing a new wave of monoliths set for Cairo should come as no surprise, should it?
