U.S. Embassy In Cairo
The American Citizens Services unit uses an online appointment system for those coming to receive routine consular services from Sunday through Thursday, except for official holidays (U.S. and Egyptian) and the last Tuesday of each month. Phone-inquiry hours are between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The latest Embassy warden message can be heard on (20) 2-2797-3000. For emergencies after-hours, U.S. citizens may reach the Embassy duty officer via (20) 2-2797-3300. The Consular Section American Citizens Services unit fax number is (20) 2-2797-2472.

U.S. citizens without Internet access may register directly with the Embassy. By registering, you make it easier for the Embassy to contact you in case of emergency.
The mailing address from the United States is: Consular Section, Unit 64900, Box 15, APO AE 09839-4900. Within Egypt or from a third country, it is 8 Kamal el-Din Salah Street, Garden City, Cairo. You can contact the Consular Section by e-mail. Consular information is available on the U.S. Embassy Cairo web site. Visa-related inquiries should be sent by e-mail.
Once a month, American Citizens Services are available at the American Center, 3 Pharana Street, Azarita, Alexandria. Every five to ten weeks, American Citizens Services are available at the Cairo American College in Maadi. Please check the Embassy website for dates and times of available services.

Telephones
Coin- or card-operated public telephones can be found all over the country (cards are on sale in small shops, often near the telephone booths). GSM reception (2.5 G) is available in all major cities. Roaming agreements exist with almost all national and international operators.

Time difference
Egypt is two hours ahead of GMT. The country usually changes to summer time on the Friday following or preceding 1st May, then back to winter time on the Friday following 30th September.
Tipping
This is very widespread in Egypt; indeed, baksheesh is a genuine institution. Everyone providing a service, however small, expects a tip in return. It is, for example, customary in restaurants (even when service is included) to leave a little extra, 10% of the bill being a reasonable amount.
