Al Matariya Obelisk and the Virgin’s Tree. The suburb of Matariya stands on the site of one ofEgypts most ancient cities On called by the Greeks Heliopolis where the world s first observatoryonce towered, and of which nothing but the Obelisk now remains. There too, is the Virgin’s Tree,which provided the Holy Family with shade and shelter during their sojourn in Egypt. Also in place is the more than 20 metre high obelisk erected by the Pharaoh Sunusert I (Senwroset). Other tombs and objects have been discovered in the area, some of which have already been restored.


Al Matariya Obelisk Museum is located in the modern Cairo suburb of Matariya. Easy access can be gained by the Matariya Bridge. All that remains is an open air museum that includes miscellaneous offering tables, statues and parts of a Thutmosis II obelisk.
