Climate: This landlocked country has a tropical climate with a single rainy season from May to September followed by a long, dry season. Conditions are at their best from November to February when the Harmattan desert winds disperse the usual humidity and create cooler, crisper but still sunny weather. The dry season lasts from November to February. Highest rainfall are in the southwest and lowest in the northeast

Getting There:

Air: Air Burkina (VH) is the country's national airline. Besides, the country controls minority shares in the regional Air Afrique airline. Other airlines flying to Burkina Faso include Aeroflot, Air Algerie, Air France, Air Ivoire, Ethiopian Airlines and Sabena. The international airport - Ouagadougou (OUA) is 8km out of the city.

Rail: The only route is the international line from Cote d'Ivoire running through to Ouagadougou. Four trains a day run from Ouagadougou to Bobo Dioulasso, of which two proceed to Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire.

Road: Routes are from Ghana, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Benin and Niger, although these are often barely adequate. Regular bus services run during the dry season, from Bobo to Bamako in Mali, and from Ouagadougou to Niamey in Niger.

Best Time To Visit: December to February.

Travel Around:

Air: Borgo, 16km from Bobo Dioulasso, is the principal domestic airport. Flights go to Bouake, Bamako and Tambao on Air Volta.

Driving: Traffic drives on the right. International Driving Licence required.

Passport and Visa: Required, but NOT by the following:

  1. Holders of National identity cards issued to nationals of Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Rep. Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Mouritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo. (2) Holders of United Nations Laissez- Passer travelling on duty. Passports Valid: Passports must be valid 6 months after date of departure. Visas: Required, but NOT by the following: (1) Nationals of Bukinafaso.
  2. Nationals of Benin, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea -Bissau, Liberia, Mali Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria , Senegal, Sierra Leone & Togo (4) Holders of re-entry permits.

Recommended Immunisation: diphtherisa, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, malaria, meningitis, yellow fever, polio, TB, tetanus,typhoid.

Compusory Vacination: Yellow fever certificate required by all. Exempt infants under 1 year

Museums: Musee de Manega, Musee du Kadiogo, Musee du Poni art Lobi, Musee provinciel du Houet

Religion: Christian (mainly Roman Catholic), Indigenous beliefs, Muslim

Credit Cards: Are not widely accepted. You will find Visa and Amex of some use for expensive hotels and travel services in Ouagadougou and, to an even more limited extent, in Bob-Dioulasso.

Business Hours: Businesses are open from 0730 to 1230 and 1500 to 1730 Monday to Friday and from 0900 to 1300 on Saturday. Banks are open from 0730 to 1100 and from 1530 to 1700 Monday to Friday. Shops are open from 0800 to 1300 and 1600 to 1900 Monday to Saturday.
