Equatorial Guinea Travel Facts

Natural Features: Equatorial Guinea is made up of the Island of Bloko and some smaller Islands as well as a mainland section called Rio Muni. The mainland is covered by tropical forest whereas the islands are mountanious with extinct volcanoes and rain forests. The wet season is from July to January on the Islands and from April to May and Oct to Dec on the mainland.

Culture: As with nearly all cultures, song and dance are important rituals, and there are several Fang dances.

Getting There:

Air: One flight a week from Madrid, Spain, takes you to the capital, Malabo. This is the best route if travelling direct from the US to Equatorial Guinea. There are also regular flights to Douala in Cameroon and these link up with direct flights to various European cities including London, Paris and Rome. There are also flights from several west and central African capitals.

Sea: There is a ferry, the Doña Elvira, which makes a clockwise trip (Malabo-Douala-Bata-Malabo) once a week on an irregular basis. The Malabo-Douala segment is usually a 12-hour, overnight trip, while the Douala-Bata and Bata-Malabo segments take about 24 hours.

Travel Around:

Air: The country's national airline schedules six flights a week from Malabo to Bata.

Road: There are good bush taxi connections around Bioko island, while in Rio Muni about three minibuses a day run each way along the coast road between Bata and Acalayong and six a day head inland to Ebebiyin.

Driving: Iternational Driving permit required

Visas: Required, but NOT by the following: (1) Nationals of Equatorial Guinea & United States.

Recommended Immunisation: diphtheria, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, malaria, meningitis, polio, TB, tetanus, typhoid, yellow fever. Reommended in some circumstances, seek further advice.

Compusory Vacination: Yellow fever certificate if arriving from infected areas.
