Liberia Travel Facts

Natural Features: The coastal area is sandy, low and interspersed with lagoons and swamps. Inland the land forms a great belt of high forest and further inland is a plateau where the forest is less dense. Two rivers Morro and Mono flow southwestward into the Atlantic Ocean.

Getting There:

Air: Main airlines serving Liberia include Ethiopian Airlines, Aeroflot and Zambia Airways.
Road: Best routes to Liberia are through Guinea Republic, Sierra Leone and Cote d'Ivoire, but they are impassable during the rainy season.
Sea: There are unscheduled freighter services with passenger accommodation from European ports. The main Liberian ports are Monrovia, Buchanan, Greenville, Harper and Robertsport.

Best Time To Visit: August and Novembar.

Travel Around:

Air: There are presently no flights within Liberia
Road: Traffic drives on the right. Difficulties in bypassing lagoons and bridging river estuaries often result in long detours and delays along the coast.
Sea and Lakes: There is a passenger service between Monrovia and Buchanan. Unscheduled coastal steamers may sometimes take passengers.
Rail: Three lines run inland from the coast. All are primarily used for the transport of mining produce from the interior, but the privately-owned Lamco line operates a daily passenger/freight service from Buchanan to Yekepa, near the border with Cote d'Ivoire and Guinea.
Driving: International Driving Permit recommended, temporary licence available from local authorities on presentation of Uk licence.
Passport and Visa: Required, but NOT by the following:

  1. Holders of an official travel order issued to members of the United States Armed Forces.
  2. Holders of United Nations Laissez-Passer
  3. Holders of a valid Seaman Book travelling o duty.

Passport validity: Passport must be valid 6 months from date of entry. Visas : Required, but NOT by the follwowing : (1) Nationals of Liberia (2) Nationals of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d,Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kore (South), Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone & Togo. (3) Holders of diplomatic jor official passport accredited to Liberia. (4) Holders of a re-entry permit.
Notes: (1) Visitors wishing to stay for more than 15 days must report ot the immigration Office, Broad Street, Monrovia within48 hous of arrival. Two pssport-size photographs are required.

Recommended Immunisation: diphtheria, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, malaria, meningitis, polio, TB, tetanus, typhoid. Recommended in some circumstances, seek further advice.
Compusory Vacination: Yellow fever certificate required by all. Exempt infants under 1 year.

Business Hours: Most businesses are open from 0830 to 1700 Monday to Friday and from 0900 to 1300 on Saturday. Banks are open from 0930 to 1200 Monday to Thursday and until 1230 on Friday. Shops are open from 0800 to 1300 and 1500 and 1800 Monday to Saturday.
