Natural Features: Malawi is a landlocked country. A Strip of low ground runs along the western Lake shore, high plateau cover much of the country. Main highland areas are Nyika and Viphya plateaux in the north Lake Malawi is the largest and the main river is shire.

Getting There:

Air: The main airport for international flights is at Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. Airlines flying to Malawi from Europe include KLM, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways
Road: The country shares border posts with Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique. There are bus transport services from all the neighbouring countries

Best Time To Visit: April to October.

Travel Around:

Air: Air Malawi has at least two flights a day between Lilongwe and Blantyre one-way, and three flights a week between Lilongwe and Mzuzu. One can also fly from Lilongwe or Blantyre or to Club Makokola on Lake Malawi's southern shore. There is only one air charter company operating in Malawi, although others are expected to start up as the demand from the growing tourist trade increases. Sefofane Malawi links the major towns and tourist centres around the country. Fares vary according to the number of people in a group, so you should always contact the company for a quotation. As a guide, however a charter flight from Lilongwe to Salima.
Road: Most buses around Malawi are operated by a private company called Stagecoach and come in several different types. Top of the range is Coachline, a daily luxury service that runs non-stop between Blantyre and Lilongwe and Mzuzu with air conditioning, toilet, free newspapers, food, steward service and top-quality drivers.
Rail: The main railway line is centred in Blantyre, where passenger trains proceed daily Monday to Friday to and from Balaka. There is also a twice-weekly service between Limbe and Nsanje, in the far south of Malawi.
Driving: Driving is on the left. International Driving Permit or Uk licence required.

Passport and Visa: Required, but NOT by the following:

  2. Holders of Organisation of African Unity ( OAU) Laissez-Passer whilst on official OAU business.
  3. Holders of African Development Bank (ADB) Laissez-Passer whilst on official duty.
