Culture: French is the official language, but Creole is the most widely spoken. Few speak English. The Catholic faith dominates the island's religious character. Hindus and Muslims follow their respective religions freely and most large towns have both a mosque and a temple.
Food:Reunionnais have an array of culinary traditions to choose from - French, Indian, Chinese and Creole - and many recipes contain elements of several cuisines. Graines, which may be red or white beans, lentils or peas, are common ingredients in Creole dishes, and are invariably served as a creamy side dish along with rougail (spicy hot tomato and vegetable chutney).


Getting There:

Air: There are flights between Reunion and Mauritius, the Seychelles, Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar, South Africa, Kenya and metropolitan France. For other international destinations, you'll have to get a connecting flight from Mauritius

Travel Around:

Air: Roland Garros airport is located about 11km east of St-Denis. A special airport bus travels frequently between the airport and St-Denis, as do taxis.
Road: Taxis operate in the towns on the normal hire-on-demand basis. In country areas, where there are no buses, they operate on a scheduled timetable. The Reunion bus service Cars Jaunes, covers most parts of the island with several main routes.
Driving: Driving is on the right, International Driving Permit recommended.

Passport and Visa: Required, but NOT by the following: Holders of National Identity Cards expired a maximum of 5 years issued to nationals of the European Union. Passport validity: Please contact nearest Embassy/Consulate.

Visas: Required, but NOTby the following:

  1. Nationals of European Union countries.
  2. Alien residents with a valid carte de residence and a valid passport (see exit visa)

Notes: (1) All persons must hold onwards or return tickets for their remaining journey with the endorsement Coupon valant caution de rapatriment ( Coupon valant caution de rapatriment (Coupon serving as a repatriation surety) is compulsory on the way flight ticket if there is no continuation of the journey, Enquire at the prefecture of the 'department' the person is going to. Also, sufficient funds must be held for maintenance for the intended length of stay or a lodging certificate.
Recommended Immunisation: diphtheria, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio, TB, tetanus, typhoid. Recommended in some circumstances, seek further advice.
Compusory Vacination: yellow fever certificate if arriving from infected areas, Exempt infants under 1 year
