Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga Admits Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir Visit Was 'Wrong'

Published on Tuesday 31st August 2010

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga said on Sunday that Kenya was mistaken to invite Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to last week's signing ceremony for the country's new constitution. Odinga said despite efforts to "foster good neighbourliness" it was "wrong".

"We are going to look very bad in the eyes of the international community if we allow someone who has been indicted to come and spoil the party for us," Odinga told a special service at the Kinoo Pentecostal Church of East Africa, near Nairobi.

Odinga's comments come after criticism of Kenya for Bashir invitation and failure to arrest the indicted Sudanese leader.

"Kenya wishes to reaffirm its commitment to the ICC [International Criminal Court]," Richard Onyonka, the junior foreign affairs minister said on Sunday.

Former United Nations chief Kofi Annan had said that Kenya must make their position on the ICC clear.
