Some 33 people were burnt to death after two buses collided in Potiskum in northern Nigeria and burst into flames, Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Commission said on Tuesday. One of the buses lost control after a tyre burst and rammed into a bus going in the opposite direction.

"All the 33 occupants of the two buses were burnt beyond recognition," said Boyi Alli Maigari, head of the Federal Road Safety Commission.

Those on the buses in Yobe state were commuting, he said. The dead were given a mass burial in Potiskum.

More than 17,000 people died and 73,000 were injured in road accidents throughout Nigeria from 2007 to 2009.
