Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete Wins Election With 60 Per Cent

Published on Saturday 6th November 2010

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has been declared the winner of the country's election on Friday. He took over 61 per cent of the votes.

His closest rival Wilbrod Slaa of the Chadema party won close to 26 per cent and Ibrahim Lipumba of the Civic United Front came third with close to 8 per cent.

The election on Sunday passed off peacefully. On Wednesday, Slaa asked for the announcement of the results to be postponed, saying there was a discrepancy in data collected by the electoral commission and by officials from his party.

Kikwete is beginning his second and final term. He won 80 per cent of the vote in the 2005 election.
