Biden Praises Kenyan People, Urges More Reforms

Published on Wednesday 13th April 2011

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has praised the people of Kenya for bringing change to their country in the wake of the 2007 post-election violence.
He met Tuesday at the White House with Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, continuing discussions that began last June when the vice president visited Nairobi.
Biden said Kenya needs to implement democratic reforms to improve accountability and transparency, and that the United States remains a partner in those efforts.
Biden and Odinga also discussed regional security issues, including efforts in Somalia and Sudan.
After Kenya's 2007 election, both President Mwai Kibaki and  Odinga claimed victory.  After months of unrest, the two men reached a power-sharing deal that made  Odinga prime minister.
The post-election violence killed some 1,300 people and displaced another 300,000.
