30 Arrested in Attack on Congo President's Home

Congolese officials say at least 30 people have been arrested in connection with the attack on the Kinshasa home of President Joseph Kabila.Authorities say Kabila was not at home Sunday when dozens of men wielding guns and machetes attacked the presidential residence.  The attackers were repelled by the presidential Republican Guard. Communications Minister Lambert Mende said Monday that at least seven attackers were killed.Authorities have not named any suspects in the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility.Kabila first came to power in the DRC after his father, Laurent Kabila, was assassinated in 2001. He won Congo's first democratic election in 2006 and faces re-election later this year.Congo's five-year civil war officially ended in 2003, but parts of the country remain volatile, especially the east, where government forces have been unable to subdue militia and rebel groups.
